Zayn Malik Talks About His Struggles With Eating Disorder And Anxiety

Zayn Malik, former One Direction member, has recently talked to Sunday Times Style magazine and opened up about how he struggled with both eating disorder and anxiety last summer.

He also mentioned the agonizing pressure of constantly being in the spotlight as a member of one of the world’s most successful boy bands, which apparently made him realize he needed professional help.

Every Area Of My Life Was Controlled

“It was a control thing,” Malik explained. “Every area of my life was so regimented and controlled, it was the one area where I could say, ‘No, I’m not eating that.’ Once I got over the control, the eating just came back into place, super naturally.”

The pop star previously stated that he would go days without eating anything, but now he’s getting better, thanks to spending time with his mom and enjoying her homemade cooking.

Go, Zayn’s mom!

My Anxiety Haunted Me

In the interview, Malik also talked about his fights with crippling anxiety. In case you didn’t know, the singer had to cancel his Summertime Ball set last June due to panic attacks and severe performance anxiety.

“I flew into the UK last night to appear in my home country in front of my family, friends, and most importantly my UK fans,” he confessed via his Twitter account at the time. “Unfortunately my anxiety that has haunted me throughout the last few months around live performances has gotten the better of me … with the magnitude of the event, I have suffered the worst anxiety of my career.”

Now, Malik looked back at that time and was proud of his actions:

“People saw strength in that, and they didn’t seem to expect it from a guy, but they expect it from a female, which to me is crazy,” he said in the interview with Sunday Times Style. “We’re all human. People are often afraid to admit difficulties, but I don’t believe that there should be a struggle with anything that’s the truth.”

There you go folks – if you have an eating disorder or anxiety issues, just go back home to your mom and let her cook for you! There’s no better medicine.
